Fenced by majestic peaks, Langothang in Laya came to life yesterday as people from different parts of the country gathered to celebrate the Fourth Royal Highland Festival.

Adorned in lavish ornaments, their bjas (black tents) showcasing lifestyle, products and cattle, and varying hues dotting the ground, the highlanders are at the heart of the festival.

Inaugurating the festival yesterday morning, Prime Minister Dr.Lotay Tshering said the occasion, conceived by His Majesty The King, is an opportunity to celebrate the lives of the highlanders and come closer to understanding the significance of the role they play in our country.

Yesterday the Laya run, cultural performances, ngagoe competition among women, animal parade and tug of war. The Prime Minister’s team secured victory as they pulled rope against the film industry team.

The two-day festival was a celebration of culture, occasion of bonding with the brothers and sisters in the highlands, and relishing of one’s pride as a Bhutanese.

In the presence of the Prime Minister, the festival witnessed five-kilometre cross country race, horse riding competition, cultural performances by highland communities and film association today. Competition for the best yak, horse, and dogs were also held.

Conceived and initiated by His Majesty the King, the festival this year saw the highest number of local and international participants.
