Lyonchhen Dr Lotay Tshering joined the Foundation Day celebration at Khesar Gyalpo University of Medical Sciences of Bhutan on 2nd March, 2019.
The Khesar Gyalpo University of Medical Sciences of Bhutan is the only Medical University in the Country. It was established in 2012.
Lyonchhen congratulated the faculty and students of KGUMSB and shared that it gave him immense joy to be a part of the founding day as he was personally involved during the inception of KGUMSB.
At the celebration, Lyonchhen spoke of the importance social sectors like health and education are for our nation. He underscored that such importance has been bestowed and envisioned by our farsighted Monarchs.
Lyonchhen shared that the Royal government pledges the enhancement of the health sector, aspiring to specializing secondary health care to all 20 Dzongkhags and a tertiary multidisciplinary health care center. He added that Bhutan has the best primary health care system in the region and that now the enhancement of the health sector is vital.
The Khesar Gyalpo University of Medical Sciences was established by an Act of Parliament to provide quality medical and health education in Bhutan to address the shortage of healthcare workers and improve the quality of health services.
It is aimed to make Bhutan not only self-sufficient in core health workforce but also create opportunities to export healthcare workers to other countries, as well as to attract foreign medical and healthcare students.
Foreign Minister Tandi Dorji, Health Minister Dechen Wangmo and Finance Minister Namgay Tshering were also present for the celebration.
